Indie pop trio The Shells voted one of MTV’s Best Breakout Bands in NYC
Top 3 Finalists to Compete at The Fillmore, Sept. 11, 2009
New York, NY – August 25, 2009 – New York City based female vocal trio The Shells were voted as one of top 3 finalists in the MTV Video Music Awards ’09 Best Breakout Artist NYC competition. Voted by MTV as one of the top 3 out of 190+ entrants, The Shells will duke it out with two other bands at The Fillmore in NYC on September 11, 2009.
Comprised of members Carrie Welling, Melanie Klaja, and Jessica Waltz, The Shells will compete against NYC local bands Me Talk Pretty and Red Directors in front of their fans and top MTV VMA talent at a Time Warner Cable MTV VMA weekend pre-party on 9/11. All 3 will perform as openers for Cobra Starship. All 3 bands will also be featured for two weeks or more on MTV Networks’ Video On Demand and on MTV2 Online between Sept. 13th to October 13th, 2009. The Grand Prize will be the MTV Video Music Award for Best Breakout NYC Artist as well as the opportunity to be showcased nationwide on either MTV’s rock show Rail N’ Rock or its rap show Sucker Free.
“I am so excited about this opportunity,” says Welling of The Shells. “We’ve been working so hard for the past 4 years, and we’re finally putting out our debut album Written Roads. So winning this contest couldn’t have come at a better time!”
Formed in 2005, The Shells have performed at several notable venues around NYC, including The Knitting Factory, The Cutting Room, the Living Room and Pianos. They call their sound “cosmo country”-- a new genre that they’ve coined to encapsulate their unique blend of urban pop/rock with a country vibe. Their debut album, Written Roads, will be released on their own label We Three Records on Oct. 8, 2009.
