5 Reasons Steve Perry Walked Away From Journey

5 Reasons Steve Perry Walked Away From Journey

The more time that passes since Steve Perry left Journey the larger his shadow grows for the members of the band and for his fans Sure, Arnel Penetta is a great guy with a wonderful voice, but he is not “The Voice”. That honor belongs to Steven Ray Perry and to him alone as As we reflect on the decade that Steve spent with the band as well as look forward to his new solo album, Here are five reasons the Steve Perry literally walked away from everything almost two decades ago. And before we get started I gotta give credit where credit is due. I stumbled across a 2013 article by Jessica Radloff that must have really caught Steve in a vulnerable moment because within the brief conversation that she had with Steve, he really bared his soul he let down his guard and shared the reasons that he chose to walk away from it all. The first reason is pretty simple There’s something to be said for getting out while you’re on the top Whether we’re talking about an entertainer or an athlete, there are numerous examples of individuals who did not know when to say when. And clearly stepping away from the limelight can be a difficult thing But you know what the same level of success is often extremely difficult to duplicate the second time around Another reason is that Journey’s concert schedule was relentless and Steve’s voice was the biggest casualty of that schedule The fact that Steve recognized the strain that the grueling schedule was putting on his voice is actually pretty remarkable. His willingness to step away from it all is a testament to the fact that Steve valued his vocal talents more than those around him. Unfortunately, Steve’s vocal skills aren’t as easily replaced as say a guitar or some other instrument. At the end of the day and frankly this one might have been a bit too late if you ask me, Steve recognized that to save his voice he had to put the brakes on. And along with the rigorous tour schedule and this same interview Steve talks about how he felt like he? Just needed to get away from the industry to do something different. On another video I’ve talked about the fact that Steve actually considered changing careers completely. Believe it or not, Steve actually considered doing a 180 degree turn and becoming a doctor It was only after spending time with cadavers of all things that he realized that he might not be cut out for the medical field And we can’t forget that Steve’s mother had recently passed away Losing a loved one has a way of making someone really think about what is important. It causes a person to reassess their priorities, and this was certainly true with Steve During this interview Steve said there’s a whole thing called life, and it’s not just about the entertainment industry There’s more to life than singing and touring You know… Sometimes you really don’t need a reason other than thinking, “I just don’t want to do it anymore”. And, truthfully, that may be the best reason of all Trying to justify your decision to others means that you’re trying to find a reason for other people to understand why… You’ve made a decision They have no real stake in any way. The ability to listen to your inner sense Be true to yourself and feel when something isn’t right, is a gift So what do you think? Do you agree with me? Let me know in the comment section below and please click on the like button on this video As always I would be honored if you would consider subscribing to my humble little classic rock channel and most importantly Thank you for watching. I really appreciate it

Steve Perry didn't walk away from Journey. He was fired. Jonathan Cain called him, and told him that the band was moving on without him. Steve Perry was a phenomenal singer, but he was a control freak, like Dennis DeYoung was with Styx. Neal Schon also said, he lost some of his hearing, because Steve had to have his vocals blasting on stage. I am a musician, and have felt with ego maniacs. It is impossible to deal with them. After years of just dealing with it, you blow up. You begin to hate what you are doing, and playing music is supposed to be fun. I too have left bands because of ego maniacs. It's no fun at all. There is a sating, if you don't love what you do, get out or get rid of the problem that stops you from loving it.

We all, as individuals, have our own, seperate lives to live. We can't live through or for someone else. Our uniqueness is our greatest asset. Steve Perry exploited(and is still doing so) his life to the fullest. We all have something equally important to contribute, if we would just realize it. Life IS mulitifacited; there's more to it than just singing and touring. Ultimately, Steve's life is his business.
(P.S. – Steve can be seen, from time to time, at Giants games at A.T.T. Park in the left field bleachers, and, yes, when the Giants play "Don't Stop Believing" during the mid 8th inning break, there is Steve, up on Jumbotron, singing along with the crowd).

I think when Mr. Perry was younger and thinner it wasn't as hard for Steve. But comes the beatdown that is frequent heavy touring, then inflammation and subsequent weight gain. A heavier body stresses out the joints (hip).Next thing you know what used to be fun is now a complete pain in the ass. And nobody else understands cuz they're not going through it and starts getting pissy about it. Dennis DeYoung anyone ?( Styx)

There’s a great 2008 GQ interview with Steve. It’s the first time I heard about how hard he researched doctors and hip prosthetics before deciding which was best for him. He was very smart to take the time to do this. If the guys in the band had been more concerned about him and his health than touring, things could have turned out differently.

I agree. Steve had the best voice ever, but the demands of a tour (plus aging) can have a toll. I had an extremly high voice as well, and sang, but as I aged I lost the ability to hit super high notes. I can’t imagine what it was like doing that night after night. He had his time, and recognized as the best, and no one can take away from that.

For these reasons and more, this has made him even more of a legend and has earned him more respect from his fan base than almost any other performer in his time. Other singers (*cough* Tyler/Jagger *cough*) should take a lesson. I bet he is the most sought out to imitate/mimic than any other signer out there. And for good reason.

Steve was smart. He saved his own life and started living. He had enough money. Why stay when you can have your life. I walked away from my job at 55. Why because I wanted control of my life while my health was still good. Money isn’t everything especially when you have enough to be ok. He has more than enough. Smart move on Steve’s part

His mother was sick and he had personal things going on and he was so stressed. He just couldn't do it anymore. He had surgery on his hip. I had 3 surgeries on one hip. I know what you go through. I still Love Steve and his music. He'll always be No. 1 in my heart.

Back in 1975-76 My brother Danny and I, Tommy Perez, we had a band called the Main Squeeze in Hanford, CA where Steve Perry was born. My band played as the house band for 1.5 yrs. at the El-Rancho Hotel & Dining. In that time period my band was made up of local artists. We had the pleasure one night of having Steve Perry come up on stage and he sang Rock-N-Roll Hoochie-cue by Edgar Winter. I will never for get the night, we had a great time on stage and the crowd went wild when Steve sang. He was in a band called the Sully's around that same time. I think that Steve is a man of his own beliefs and direction, let him be just Steve, that's all he wants. Sure he was great as the lead for Journey, but leave it at that and let his legacy stand the test of time…….his contribution to music will always be super, and his voice is one of the best of all time……….congratulations by brother.

Hmm….I thought he quit, left the band just before they went on tour for Trial by Fire. He quit.
I agree with you, he has an incredible voice and will always be special but he's not Journey….he never was Journey and he's no longer a part of that band. Journey was an awesome jazz fusion band before he came along and they are a good rock band to this day. Yes they don't have the radio hits they did during the Perry hey-day but the music world has changed significantly…I'm glad the band I love hasn't tried to cater to that…they just keep making Journey music.

Steve doesn’t owe anyone anything.I hope he’s enjoying his life and has the same amount of joy he gave me.Steve and Bob Seger provided the sound track of my life basically. He did go out as #1. A man of his word he didn’t pull a KISS. Saying your retired then touring over and over is pathetic.KISS drove the wheels of they’re careers.Going out retiring at #1 is a classy thing to do.Steve seems like a pretty classy guy.At the H.O.Fame he could of not shown up but he didn’t. He showed up for his fans with compliments for every band member.A CLASSY thing to do.

I do totally agree with you. The main thing that Journey knew was rock and money. They had absolutely no concern for his vocals. It would be about as close as it was when he came back from Hawaii with excruciating pain in his hip as I currently have that and I am in that decision time as he was. It’s not something you take lately. I know my 21 year old son has both replaced and one was done twice. I agree with what he did and why he did it. They weren’t exactly kind to him over the hip, how would they have been had he gave them lets say a 3 month notice as to complete a tour. Not good. No matter what it wasnt going to be good. Im glad he is coming back with his own voice, his own music under his own conditions. He is a one of a kind and I think it is easy to say a very kind man.

First and foremost, main reason Steve Perry has to quit touring or as lead vocalist of journey was due to an injury and he needed hip replacement, so with regards to protecting his vocal chords was only secondary reason. Founder Neal Schon did not want him back in the team anyway, when he left for some time so Neal relentlessly search and tried for replacement that could neatly match SP vocal talents and after some trials from different rock singers, eventually he found Arnel Pineda from YT videos. Arnel Pineda would certainly never be Steve Perry, and so Steve Perry would never be Arnel Pineda after 10 years Arnel resurrected Journey!

THERE IS NO NEED TO COMPARE STEVE PERRY AND ARNEL PINEDA. IT WAS NOT ARNEL's FAULT WHATEVER BROUGHT JOURNEY TO STOP MAKING MUSIC, OR SLOWED DOWN THE MUSIC. JOURNEY SHINES AGAIN WHEN ARNEL PINEDA WAS FOUND. LET US JUST BE HAPPY FOR THAT. ARNEL JUST WANTS TO SING WHEN HE WAS ASKED TO JOIN JOURNEY. HE WAS THRILLED AND VERY GRATEFUL. I LISTENED AND WATCHED AND SO DOES MILLIONS OF PEOPLE. LET US ALL ACCEPT IT THAT NO ONE, NO ONE IS STOPPING STEVE PERRY AND THE JOURNEY TO GET BACK TOGETHER, NOT BEFORE, NOT NOW, AND THERE WILL NEVER BE ANYONE WHO WOULD STOP THEM FROM REUNITING. ARNEL WILL NOT BLOCK THEM FROM REUNITING. LET US ALL BE HAPPY, AND SHARE HAPPINESS TO ALL. WISHING YOU ALL TO BE HAPPY EVERY DAY.

I’m a Filipino so hat-tip to Arnel Pineda, vicarious for his success and honoured to see a Filipino to be part of this prestigious endeavour… BUT this video says the truth, the quality and texture of the voice, Steve Perry cannot be replace. The music industry is still a business, Arnel is Journey’s saving grace and vice versa for Journey’s come-back. Still, Steve’s renditions of all the songs is irreplaceable …. just go back to the videos when he interpreted all the songs… just flawless. We are privileged to have Arnel sing Journey’s songs, we are happy for his good fortune … and we can be confident enough, SO NO NEED to be defensive over this video, because it’s the truth.

I think it is over money. No one denies Steve Perry's unique voice made Journey. Along with his good looks, but it is a rock star's good looks. Long hair and great body. I think the Journey business, owners, or corporation or whatever, kept giving the illusion they were really appreciating Steve Perry, and although he was paid very well, I think Journey business people kept making him believe he was going to get so much more. After all, Journey was making all this money from Steve Perry. I think things came to a point where Steve Perry felt Journey was not going to follow through. Never will. There was some point Steve Perry realized something. I sort of have had my own experiences with this, people or the owners keep telling you that you are great all the time, and giving you these sweet words all the time only goes so far. It is like when you work as an entertainer, you hear all these flattering words from your people over you, then you realize they are really thinking you can be replaced while telling you that you are very special, that cover by Steve Perry's people can only last so long.

Guess what? Steve Perry cannot be replaced.

Arnel never said he could be Steve Perry. Arnel said he understands the people want Steve Perry back, because he is a big fan of Steve Perry too. Steve Perry is not an old 70. I wish he would grow his hair long, like it was, wear those performance tops he wore onstage, and sing with Journey again. Keep Arnel, but bring Steve Perry back. Journey needs to give Steve Perry what he worked so hard for.

Steve Perry left Journey over money. Everyone knows it.

Steve Perry the best singer ever in my opinion, I love Journey my favorite band. Arnel Pineda has done a good job but Steve Perry is better and Journey hasn't been the same since he left…. I respect his reasons for leaveing and can't blame him for it.. especially the last reason " I just didn't want to do it anymore." face it no matter if your a singer , actor or no matter what job you have sooner or later your going to get tired of it and want to move on.

I can understand that I'm just a normal person who works a regular job. nothing special. but after 20 years at the job I was getting tired and wanted to move on to something else. not to mention my own health issues were starting to effect my job….

so you can imagine being on tour 24/ 7 , 365 days a year in a band your going to get tired and worn down. weither your the top singer or playing a instrument.

Steve Perry is such an amazing, versatile singer – best rock vocalist in history. His voice just fills you with light. I noticed that he’s very intuitive and in touch with his emotions. He was right to walk away from it all when he lost his passion for music and when he was at the top. He lost his mother and his friend Phil Lynott in Thin Lizzy. Death brings every buried feeling to the surface.

Arnel is not in his league, Steve’s a rock legend. Arnel’s just a tribute singer who imitates him and uses auto tune and backing tracks. So comparing the two is ridiculous. It’s kind of insulting.
