When I discovered that family violence is the leading cause of injury and death to women in Australia, that’s when I knew I had to change it. I’m really interested in thinking about not just what the law says, but what the law means for real people who have to engage with it. If you’re living with the wreckage of family violence in your life, It’s really difficult to have to go to different courts to have your matters dealt with. If you can go to the same court, it’s going to be safer and it’s going to be easier for those who experience family violence. The work that I did as a part of the royal commission means that victims of family violence will be able to go to one court to seek their family violence intervention order and also to have some basic decisions made about where their children are going to live, how to divide their property. We’re achieving a lot in bringing confidence in victims coming forward and making allegations of family violence. I’m at Monash because it’s a university that encourages me to go out there and speak to real people who the justice system impacts on.
