Dengan Basikal Aku Menjelajah S3E5 – Nomadic Life in Kyrgyzstan on Summer Time

there is no strength in this world that can last forever no one can stay young forever without getting old no daylight can last forever without turning into night I keep travelling… while I’m still young and strong… always looking for experiences from all corners of the world this time I’m travelling on skis through the thick snow to discover places that I could never reach with my bicycle and when the snow finally melts I continued my journey on horseback observing with my own eyes… …the life under the shadow of the Tien Shan I explored Kyrgyzstan… admiring the natural beauty and the uniqueness of the nomadic way of life throughout my journey to the celestial mountains 4 May 2015 summer has shown its sign to arrive Kyrgyzstan the temperature keep rising everyday the heat from the sun has melted the snow here the locals have started to construct their bozuis and the nomadic life will flourish soon daylight is becoming longer now I began to see the smiles on their faces the land of Kyrgyzstan which was sleeping covered with a blanket of snow has just woke up and now covered with plants and green grass since I ended my ski touring adventure for the whole winter I spent most of my time with a friend in Jolkolot village Almaz he is an expert when dealing with horses and he owns more than 20 horses he also knows the mountain area here and sometimes he becomes a guide taking tourists to explore the mountains here on horseback he also speaks good English my name is Almaz I’m from Jolkolot village, Kyrgyzstan this is where we put our horses most of them are “myngicak” breed there are many tourists who visit us here and we do many activities for tourists here especially horse riding on summer time we have many types of horses here Kyrgyz horses and others we do horse riding adventures up to 10 days the reason why we choose to live here we live here because personally I love horses we live here to raise our horses and the air is fresh here the lives of our ancestors were closely related to horses they use horses in their daily lives we use horses as a transport in the mountains and we have our own traditional drink which is called “kymyz”, made from horse milk Almaz is like my own brother and his family treat me like their own almost everyday I helped him taking care of his horses and he taught me a lot on horse riding and handle the horses I bought a few horses and he helped me a lot to take care my horses and gave me a lot of tips to travel with my horses in the Tien Shan mountains his life depends a lot on his horses and he still continues the tradition of his ancestors living with his animals and travels with his horses in the Tien Shan mountains when the grassland turned green in the Tien Shan the Kyrgyz who live in the mountains mostly living the nomadic life started to spread and built their bozuis all over the mountains here which have strategic places like along rivers or anywhere with fresh grass and water source they also have events like this almost every month during summer which is called Sal Burun a festival for them to show off their skills on horse riding, archery, sword fighting and eagle hunting they will also wear their traditional clothes and sing their traditional songs to preserve it from being extinct over time I observed the traditional nomadic life here which are still strongly preserved by the Kyrgyz community here if people in the city is heading towards modernisation these countryside people are still holding strong their tradition since generations Kyrgyzstan is part of the ancient Silk Road which was the traders route that connects China and the Middle East this contributes a lot on the culture of the Muslim population here and there are many similarities on their lifestyle with the Kazakhs and Mongols who used to be part of a very fearsome army in the ancient times the Golden Horde led by Genghis Khan the fighting skills of their horsemen in the battlefield were no match to any other army in the ancient world these are like a celebration for the nomadic people where people from the countryside and the mountains gather to strengthen their relationship festival like Sal Burun started to become famous again after Kyrgyzstan got their independence from Soviet Union over 20 years ago as a remembrance and revive the nomadic tradition here which were lost during the Soviet era their ancestors way of living the nomadic life since thousands of years ago is something they are very proud of the daylight is getting longer here temperature is increasing in lower land but it is different in the mountains it’s still very cold especially during the night the snow has melted the rivers are flowing and the grass is turning green the nomads are building their tents along the valleys in the Tien Shan they will usually build their tents high in the mountains as early as May and will stay around 4-5 months here while the grass here are still fresh and not very cold some of them carry guns with them and hunting dogs called Taigan to watch over their animals from wolf attacks from the mountains here the shepherds here will usually live together in a small group of 2-3 people and they will usually take turns to watch over their animals this shepherd is living in the valley of Arashan and he lives in Aksu village with his family located around 20km from here for every 5-6 days he will return to his family and will be replaced by his friend for another 5-6 days before coming back here he takes care about 400 sheep here it is very calm and peaceful here far from the problems in big cities the nomads here look very calm from their faces when summer arrives the mountains here are filled with tourists mostly from Europe and sometimes… Malaysian tourists for almost 2 weeks I accompanied 2 of my friends from Malaysia to explore the beautiful mountains of Tien Shan I took them around Issykkul Lake and horse riding in Arashan valley for a few days they were amazed to see the beauty of Tien Shan mountains they also stayed in bozuis which is the Kyrgyz traditional tent and tried the local Kyrgyz food even though they were here for a short time but they managed to experience a bit of the nomadic life in the land of the Kyrgyz who are mostly living the simple life but the freedom and calmness are clearly seen in their faces seeing the beauty of Tien Shan mountains and the uniqueness of the local culture here is a priceless experience and hard to forget
