Those three mountains aren't ordinary mountains. One is the axis that the universe rests on, the other is the mountain that holds up the heavens (including the jade palace) and the final mountain was Mount Tai, the symbolic reprrsentation of the heaviest thing imaginable in Chinese myth

monkey's representation here is quite frankly better than what I imagined in my head reading through the book in literature class. I love that kids will have this now for future abridged looks at this allegorical classic. quite ahead of its time despite a traditional read if i'm being honest.

3:22 okay calm down don't think about what horrible stuff that horned demon might be doing to the others especially not Tripataka just focus on lifting these mountains it's not hard they're just rocks that think they're better than you but they're not they're just big and that's all they've got on you so just lift ignore the fact that you have no leverage with which to lift just defy physics like you always do and ignore the debilitating flashbacks to the five hundred years you spent sealed away exactly like this except with actual food even though it was actually molten copper it was better than nothing but now it's worse because now i've got people to worry about ineffectually while i'm stuck here forever and MY NOSE STILL ITCHESSS

9:17 That one friend who could be the best DPS you have but takes the hit and plays tank. Seriously though, it is kinda weird how despite being the most reliable teammate, the team never actually managed to beat Sandy.

I have to ask. WHY!!! why do they keep making these really complicated, and interesting villans, and than go "oh they weren't really evil after all."

It kind of feels like they are trying to not kill people…. for I actually dont know why…

@4:23 okay so were you INTENTIONALLY trying to make the Jade Emperror sound exactly like Koenma from Yu Yu Hakusho?! Because ofc this series inspired Dragon Ball but I mean the Characters themselves seem to most completely be emulated by YYH instead.

This whole time I have been repressing the urge to comment but omfg it's now officially impossible to ignore!

I never noticed how much Inuyasha was a (almost note for note) retelling of Journey to the West. (It wasn't the music that tipped me off, honest, lol.) Which is weird because there's a couple episodes with straight up ripoffs of JttW characters.

Can we just take a moment to appreciate that when these demons actually capture Tripitaka one of the first things they do is offer him to their parents? Like damn, way to break my expectations for how demonic child-parent relationship works.

So I didn't know it was another reference to Journey to the West when I first watched it, but the magical gourd shows up in one of the Dragon Ball filler episodes.

Believe it or not, that magic gourd actually appears in Dragon Ball (not Dragon Ball Z, the prequel) where two motorcycle bandits hold a mountain village hostage to making them a monthly feast and they use a gourd which they call a person's name and if the person doesn't answer their name they'll get sucked in the gourd. Thankfully it isn't instantaneous liquification as it was in the original Journey to the West version.
Also, I think that Fan that summons up the fire was also a treasure used by the Ox-King but my memory is a bit faded.

4:00 there is a shonen power that works like that. If not in Naruto then certainly in another series.
8:04 THE FIFTH TREASURE WAS A FAN?! Naruto used more Japanese mythology than I thought. It wasn't fire but it did remind me of Madara's magic fan.

    Wait. Wait a moment.

Pigsy is a pig. Ham comes from pigs. The gold demon brother ordered Pigsy to be steamed.

Have we discovered the historic origin… of Steamed Hams?

Does anyone else get slightly triggered when she says Sun Wu Kong the English way? Like, I know most people who don't speak Chinese find it hard to say things with a Chinese accent, but it's still slightly triggering. I still love this channel though

Fun story: My brother and I go to a Chinese school where one year is dedicated to learning about Wu Kong. I'm born in the year of the pig, he's born in the year of the monkey, and our grandfather on our mom's side is born in the year of the horse. So, he calls himself Wu Kong, I'm Pigsy, and my grandfather's the (direct translation warning) White Dragon horse. Fun times.
