For action cams, the Sony FDR-X3000 is phenomenal. Built in optical image stabilization and the image quality is just better than the Hero 5 and probably the Hero 6. (you can correct the colors from a GoPro after the fact to make up the gap… but stabilizing is digital, which crops the image)

I was trying to find the SONY RX1001V at 300$ less than the V but realized that they go for almost the same price 🙁 . Still a really great video. Thank you for sharing xx

Right now, I'm using a Canon Rebel XTI and a Nikon Coolpix. I'm just starting off the travel vlogging thing while in school full time, so I don't really have a lot of available funds to throw around. I'm also utilizing my phone for better video than my point and shoot.

I've been watching a lot of your "list" videos. I've added a few pieces of hardware to my wishlist, so thanks for that!!

The Sony A7 is great camera, though by definition a MIRRORLESS camera like the A7 is not a DSLR (digital single-lens REFLEX) camera. Makes me question the accuracy of the rest of your recomandations.

I got the Sony RX100 V before my current trip and it was a great purchase! I also have the GoPro Hero 5 and Karma Grip. Hero 5 is great but not seeing the screen when using the grip is super annoying. I might elect for a different Gimbal when I get home

Hey guys, Great content! How do you all pack it all? We are planning to backpack with Osprey Farpoint 70 but squeezing it all in the daypack seems limited. Whats a good recommendation to crack this nut? I have a camera backpack but just seems like too many bags at this point.

Vega brothers, your sound in this ep is not that amazing. Were you using the shotgun mic in this one or onboard mic on Sony rx100?

Going to be backpacking through Europe end of May 2018. I have the mavic pro and would love to take it with me, but being a solo female traveler makes me a bit nervous. Would you recommend me leaving it home since I'll be by myself? Heard a lot of stories about theft, especially for solo travelers.

Best travel backpacks that carry this kit, plus say other travel necessities (ie. sweaters, waterbotels, things you buy in a day)

I love your videos so much! I have a Canon 100D for now, because I am not wealthy enough to get something better and I mostly do photos only, but I think with a okay-ish microphone, I could also start vlogging. 🙂 Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

If only you were hal accurate with what you say… Sony Alphas are not DSLRs. The small cards are MICRO SD, not MINI SD. The Lacie hard drive is not a solid state. It has moving parts. Jeez, guys. Do your homework before you record a video…

I made a playlist for my Bali Vlogs series. Some crazy edits in there of hiking a volcano, snapping a surfboard in half, crashing a motorbike and a whole bunch of 4K drone footage – check 'em out https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL8BFQ-LkxKONFB3zvD257_zTv-IHMhLa7

Great video. Just a correction….All those "dslr" cameras you mentioned aren't dslr, but rather they are mirrorless. Except the canon t3i.

Almost one year on and this is defs still one of the best Essentials videos out there. I'm not sure if i would personally invest in the Gnarbox though as I have a very light/thin laptop but i'm sure it would come in handy for some people!

Dude I have all the gear, even better ones that they mentioned but still feel stuck. I don't know anybody that is into videos and filmmaking and only watching Youtube videos are not really taking me anywhere =( . Wish I could know what should be my next step (I traveled to over 40 countries, etc so getting out of my zone is not really a problem, just don't know how to make photography, etc my career).

Or just get a Yi4k+ for the price of Hero 4 to shoot [email protected] to your heart's content, amazon kit of 10 buck mounts and a vimble stabiliser for 100. Go pros ARE in fact OVERRATED. You can get Yi4k+ and a Yuneec Breeze drone for the price of GoPro6. Or get an action cam, a cheap non-camera oriented drone, rig a gimble for your action cam to the drone and voila – swimming, flying 4k.

First of all, the alpha series aren’t dslr. Secondly, most of your equipment cost “the voyage” itself.
By the way, filming in 4K it’s not necessary. While in 2018, 80% of people still watch videos on 1080 Full hd. 4k platform is still expensive. So even for gopro, the hero 3 black can handle a trip. No need to rush and buy a hero 5/6 ….

Talks about minimalism, comes up with the mirrorless A7 from Sony… This whole minimalism setup is just a joke for thousand of dollars…

A cell phone will do almost everything most people need and more. Every time I have traveled with a DSLR or any camera that didn't fit it in my pocket it got about a day of use at most.

Now that the gopro hero 7 comes with the insanely great hypersmooth stabilzation, you don’t have to bring a gimbal anymore which saves even more space. I love the sony rx100 series, but i hope the next one(the rx100vii) finally gets an external mic jack! Then it’d be the perfect travel vlogging cam. Another thing i have added to my travel kit is the insta360 one x. Although not essential, it adds incredible 360 shooting to your kit and doesnt take up much room in your bag at all. Editing on an ipad pro with luma fusion takes up less space than a laptop when on the road too. 👍🏼

Instead of taking the Gnarbox and a HDD, just go for the MY PASSPORT WIRELESS PRO, it does the same thing. It might nog be as rugged, but neither is de HDD you still brings along. So My tip, take enough memory cards, swapped those out and back them up on the My Passport. *Yes, this is been out for years by now, so this was availeble in 2017.
