Winter Summer Tire Swap || How to change a tire


hi I’m Marie from DIY Montreal and
today I’m going to show you how to change a tire my summer tires are on
mags while my winter tires are on steel rims which makes swapping them out a
totally doable do-it-yourself project before getting started you’ll need to
find your tool kit which typically can be found in the trunk sometimes with a
spare tire you should have a jack and some basic tools like a lug wrench and
some wheel chocks like these ones I’m starting with the front right wheel so
before doing anything at all I’m going to circle around the car to the opposite
left rear wheel and install my wheel chocks to make sure the car doesn’t roll
while it’s up on the jack you could also use bricks instead to wedge the wheels
you should also make sure you’re on a flat surface and ideally activate your
parking brake safety first here I’m just pulling off the lug nut caps with a tool
that comes with a car’s tool kit now before you jack up the car you first
want to loosen the lug nuts just to get them unstuck as you can see with the
cars lug wrench it can be almost impossible to get off the nuts if you’re
going to do this by annually I highly recommend getting a cross wrench like
this one for stuck on lug nuts this breaker bar is a really great tool to
have I’ll link both of these tools down in the description below so as I was
saying you first want to get your nuts unstuck using a breaker bar as you can
see this makes the job way easier and frankly I couldn’t change my tires
without one you don’t want to unscrew the nuts just yet just get each of the
nuts moving it’s important to do this before you jack up the car for safety
reasons otherwise the lateral force could cause the car to roll and fall off
the jack once your lug nuts are free grab your
jack and start getting it into position if you’re not sure where that is be sure
to check your manual they’ll typically be some sort of symbol or indicator of
the fulcrum point showing you where to position the jack my car says there’s an
upside-down triangle that leads to the leverage point so after finding the
symbol I can set my jack into position onto the metal lip under the car steel
frame just as shown in my manual making sure that Jack stays nice and square not
leaning to either side I can then slowly crank the jack to
raise the car off the ground you don’t want to raise it too high though just
enough to get the wheel off the ground you can now use your cross wrench to
remove all the lug nuts one by one next you can go ahead and pull off the
wheel if it’s stuck on give it a whack on the edge with your hand tonight loose
it’s also a good time to grab some chalk and mark your tire so you’ll know where
to install them next year ideally you want to rotate your tires
every year in a crisscross pattern like shown here however if you have
directional tires which is common for winter tires and indicated on the tire
itself by an arrow you should only rotate your tires front
to back as shown on the right here so since I have directional tires I grab
the tire marked right rear and install it front right the idea is to visually
align the bolt holes as best you can then lift the tire into place it helps
to use your knee or foot to help hold the tire on the rim at least it helps me
and grab your lug nuts and get two of them on just to hold the tire in place
continue to add the remaining lug nuts and tighten them lightly in a star
pattern then continue to go around in a star pattern to tighten all the notes
but don’t go full force just yet while the car is still jacked up otherwise you
could rock the car right off the jack alright at this point you can lower and
remove the jack here I’m using my breaker bar to fully tighten the nuts
again going in a star pattern you don’t need to give it everything you’ve got
stop when you feel a good amount of resistance and that the nut is snug but
don’t tighten to the point where you can’t get them off next year all that’s
left is to install the hub caps if you have them by tapping them in simply
repeat the process for all four tires and make sure to inflate your tires to
your cars recommended tire pressure which typically can be found inside the
driver’s side door in my case 38 psi here are some of my

    Its always best to torque your lugnuts to recommended specs with a click type torque wrench.
    Canadian tire has a digital impact gun that allows you to adjust the torque, but I don't recommend it, the calibration is off I found.

    Just did my winter tires last weekend. Not fun when it's already below zero!
    1/ If possible get a floor jack. Many cars have central jack points at each end. I can lift up the whole end of our minivan and do two tires at once
    2/ Get some axle grease and apply it to the inside of the rim at the contact points. This helps make sure that your wheel does not stick next year when you want to remove it again.
    3/ It is recommended to torque your nuts to the manufacturer specs AND THEN check again after a few days or week and recheck them with the torque wrench.

    So if i go with the logic here……you build your dowel project table, change the tires and then finish your table video with you and the coffee….caus this video is not from this morning or today…wink wink…great tuto…have a great and safe day caus there is a lot of people who still need to watch this video…9 of them this morning at 3:30 on the 15 south around St-Jerome…40 km/h blinkers and all..all over the road….sad to see…

    Hi Marie!! You guys must get snow up there lucky.we get rain down here in Oregon at least were I live in the Willamette vally. I got breaker bars in my vehicle's just because the tire stores tighten the heck out of them ,had a hard time loosening my nuts

    Just before the storm 😅. Did mine too last week! As said by another one you get get a wrench to dial the exact torque needed by specs of your car. I got one last year it s not necessary but pretty clever as you know it s the right torque applied. They go on sale at canadiantire evey few months. 😍. good job!

    You are not using VW tools correctly))) please pay attention, that tow-thingy (the one you screw into the car to tow it) fits perfectly that 17mm wrench. As a result you have quite long tool)))

    Please, for your safety, get a floor jack, 3 ton is best. Those in vehicle jacks are only designed for very occasional use, not for seasonal tire changes. It's only nylon that the thread is passing thru.

    better way is to use a torque wrench and torque to the manufacturer's recommended torque so that you don't end up stretching your bolts. Also retorque after like 50km after a tire change because driving forces could alter the nuts slightly.

    I had that jack in my Audi. I threw it in the trash along with that lug wrench and replaced it with a proper jack and cross bar.

    I will offer unsolicited advice also…
    Yes on torquing the bolts, typically 80ftlbs, tends to be less than you would normally would get 'free hand'. Makes emergency replacement a lot easier… It is much easier using a hydraulic Jack to lift the car. Ergonomic wise, there is room for improvement in your technique. In either loosening or tightening use a straight arm, and bend you knees instead of your back, use you body weight to do the work. Always force down next to you, not forward off balance. I usually have to do 2 cars, so I have both an electric and air impact wrench which ever is handy. I use a torque limiting rod on reassembly and finish off with the torque wrench. If the studs or bolts are rusty, I will put a small dab of anti seize once, which is good for many years.
